The Promised Land

Orphan Media Co-Op

This project's goal is to provide orphaned children with economic independence through the establishment of a media Co-Op that is share-owned and self-run by orphans.

They will initially be tasked with the job of producing documentaries and self advertising for Partners International Sponsor-A-Child program through CNEC. However, the end goal is that after the initial assistance from CNEC, these children will be able to market their skills to the local community and produce spiritually engaging media productions for TV, Web, Radio, Print, and Social media. If local churches and businesses begin to require their services the clients can pay the orphans for their work at the market rate.

The orphans can hire from among their peers: those in need, as well as those best qualified who are interested in this work. Hopefully this will inspire their peers to strive for academic development because there is an opportunity to move beyond the farm and subsistence farming.

Land and physical property is not the promised land that we -- the Church -- should be concerned with. If anything, Jesus has shown us that the work of the Kingdom of God is for healing hearts and lives, for bringing peace to generations; not owning holy places and physical land. In this sense the potential for impact is immense, not only will we be providing economic opportunity for orphans, but the work that they generate has the chance to influence generations of lives.

In an effort to impact lives for positive change I intend to equip orphaned children with video cameras, still cameras, microphones, Non Linear Editing software, and the knowledge with which to use these. Combined with a basic course on computer proficiency, they will use their vastly different experience of faith and newfound voice to become Musicians, Artists, Executive Producers, and Directors of Photography. I hope that their vision and their voice can stand as light and salt to the world.

I wish to take inspiration from Joshua’s example so I am beginning this project as a burden on my heart, and I invite you to join me and help in any way you can if you feel this burden as well.

Be strong and courageous, for you shall cause this people to inherit the land that I swore to their fathers to give them.
— Joshua 1:6

The Call to Arms

Our Task at Hand

We begin this project as a proof of concept working with young adults who have been raised under the CNEC orphanage and boarding school system. They have graduated Bible College or Seminary school and many are proficient in Mandarin Chinese, English, and their own native tongue. These young men and women will be the mentors and pioneering leaders in the ministry.

We will begin with an understanding of Semiotics, how signs and symbols gain meaning. This in turn will give them the analytical capabilities to build a visual language of their own. Students will learn how to apply the technical understanding of Semiotics through a series of small creative projects that will apply Art Theory to visual language and production. Following this, we will dive right into the creative process of making, reiterating, and critique. By going through the creative process, the students will learn to accept and grow from adversity, learn financing and budgeting for their own films, and networking for human resources to complete their own vision.

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me,
because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor;
he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
— Isaiah 61:1
